Unique
Security Enhancements Added to HealthCast's Logical Access Software for Proximity
Cards
FOR
IMMEDIATE RELEASE
August
26, 2009. Boise, Idaho.
HealthCast, Inc. is pleased to announce the addition of several important new
features to its proximity card software. In addition to its unique Tap-in, Tap-out,
Tap-over, and Rolling Password-Save functionality, Parity Bit Checking; Bit
Count Checking; and Facility Code Filtering is now available in the
version of eXactACCESS released this week. The addition of these security enhancements
provides additional assurances that proximity cards are being read properly, minimizing
the opportunity for bad proximity card reads or improper proximity cards being
read. Joan Mehn, Chief Executive Officer, says: "We are very pleased to bring
this new functionality to our clients, which continues HealthCast's tradition
of setting the standard in healthcare. While parity checking is common in physical
access software, HealthCast is, once again, at the forefront - this time, in providing
key logical access functionality with proximity cards."
Each
of these new features is described in more detail below:
1.
Parity Bit Checking is used to detect proximity card errors prior
to granting logical access. The HealthCast software can be configured to perform
parity bit checking so that when a person taps their card, the HealthCast software
will determine if the card data is valid based on the parity bits on the card
encoded by the manufacturer. In addition, custom parity algorithms can be configured
to cover a wide range of existing proximity cards.
2.
Bit Count Checking is used to: 1) more tightly restrict which cards
will be accepted for logical access; and 2) detect errors on cards. For example,
the software can be configured to allow only 26-bit cards to be registered or
only 26-bit and 35-bit cards to be registered. Then, if a user taps a card and
the read is returned with an incorrect number of bits, the card read will be rejected.
3. Facility
Code Filtering can be configured in the software along with Bit Count
Checking. When this is configured, the software will only accept cards with one
or more facility code values that are controlled by the organization. This feature
prevents the use of unauthorized proximity cards.
About HealthCast
HealthCast
LLC was formed
in 1996 by an orthopedic surgeon who assembled a team of executives and software
engineers to bring information technology advances to health care providers. eXactACCESS
("XA") is healthcare's most successful single sign-on and clinical workflow solution,
deployed in production environments since 2003 and having 100% success with clinical
application integration. XA manages clinical workflow at shared workstations,
speeds access to patient information, and returns clinicians securely to their
sessions as they left them. Its unique proximity badge functionality is designed
specifically to improve security and clinical workflow in hospitals, clinics,
and physician offices. For 13+ years, HealthCast has set the performance bar for
SSO and clinical workflow solutions in healthcare.
