August 2008: Excerpt from Healthcare Information Technology Strategies Newsletter Issue #145

REGARDING: Sign of the Times, by Kate Huvane in Healthcare Informatics, May, 2008.

SUB-TITLED: Adopting single sign-on can lead to improvements in workflow, clinician satisfaction and security, all with one step.

Ms. Huvane reviewed several installs and mentioned several vendors but omitted HealthCast, who in my opinion, is the best. She did report that according to HIMSS Analytics about 29% of hospitals have SSO installed, 4% are under contract. (According to J. P. Wenzlick, that means that 67% just don't get it.) Three years ago I pleaded with old friend Kent Gale to add SSO to applications they assess. In February they released their report. Paul Pitcher, KLAS research director, authored the report. Unfortunately, neither that report nor the HI article included an assessment of HealthCast, a sponsor of this newsletter. KLAS counts organizations - not the number of installed hospitals, in order to "qualify" for the report. So, an organization with 15 hospitals and a total of 16,000 employees counts as one organization ("customer"), which counts the same as a clinic with 75 employees. HealthCast has a number of large multiple-hospital customers, and fell just short of qualifying in terms of number of organizations at the time of the first report in spite of having a large base of installed hospitals (they are now qualified - go on the KLAS site under Online Ratings).

(Sentillion and Imprivata were the only 2 rated at the end of last year, so, by default, they are ranked #1 and #2 as Best of KLAS. Unfortunately, until the new report comes out at the end of this year those going to KLAS will not have access to a complete and up-to-date assessment.)

In my March, 2008, issue (post HIMSS) I reported that the Identity and Access Management market was ready to skyrocket…HealthCast's booth…was filled with hospital attendees looking for an enterprise single sign-on that really works… the demand for an effective SSO that includes inherent clinical workflow improvements with secure access is growing. HealthCast's eXactACCESS - deployed in production environments since 2003 - has an enviable track record of success and unique features. It has never been replaced - its customers rave about the product, and HealthCast's support and service. Their multi-user session management for shared workstations (at the domain level) has been in production environments since 2003 and they have been 100% successful with application integration (unmatched, as far as I know, by any other vendor in the market). My favorite eXactACCESS functionality is its' unique proximity card feature. This feature authenticates users with a tap of their card, logs them off with another tap, and offers, with eXactACCESS' configurable password-save, functionality that clinicians claim saves them up to an hour each day… HealthCast… (has)… focused on serving healthcare providers well for 12 years. Rather than marketing hype, they focus on superior service and robust solutions. Many of the CIOs talking to HealthCast were considering replacing other SSO (or quasi-SSO) solutions that they had purchased a few years ago - solutions that have never worked well for them or their clinicians (e.g., products that were unable to integrate applications, improve performance, and/or were difficult for IT to support and manage). eXactACCESS succeeds on each of these dimensions.
